New Music

What an exciting month ahead we have NEW MUSIC, Off Sonar Party
replay thanks to DJ Magazine and I managed to catch up with Rune to ask a few
questions that I wanted to asked and I will share below.

So, to start with we have had the amazing news of the new
release of the track called “Prison Grass” by Kölsch & Magit Cacoon on IPSO
records.

1. Prison Grass
2. Prison Grass (Reduced)
3. Prison Grass (Synthpella)

About
“Prison Grass”, the latest release on Kölsch’s imprint IPSO, follows a number of already-legendary collaborations between the Danish house master and his friends – Michael Mayer, Tiga, Sasha, Dubfire… To this list we can now add the inspiring Magit Cacoon, a unique and thrilling DJ and producer from Tel Aviv, Israel. Magit Cacoon’s productions have been signed to labels like Upon. You, Rebellion and Katermukke, and she’s also worked with progressive rock legend Steven Wilson, of Porcupine Tree, and runs her own imprint, Girl Scout.

On “Prison Grass”, Kölsch and Cacoon meet on a level playing field. The music is dynamic ,fierce and every time Kölsch plays it in his sets, it receives a rapturous response. The piston-pump of the rhythms provides a fertile undergrowth for flickering arpeggios and a simple, five-note riff, a mnemonic device that works its way into your memory and won’t let go. Strict yet sensuous, lush yet livid, it’s gorgeous and rambunctious, even in its more elegant ‘reduced’ version. With Kölsch booked at a clutch of festivals this summer – Lovefest, Mácháč, Sonus, Creamfields North, Mysteryland – it’s the perfect time to reacquaint your ears with his stellar co-productions.

There is a sample here of this killer track!  In case you haven’t heard it before.

Now to wait until the 15th July 2022 before it can be played loud on the decks. (So I see it as an early Birthday Present for me!)

The Interview

So, as you might know I want to try and catch Rune and Creamfields South and ask a few Interview questions however logistics didn’t work out, however Rune was amazing and suggested I email them over and would try his best to answer my questions, I have tried to mix them up a bit and so there not the same old questions over and over in interviews.  Let us know what questions you would ask next time.  Feel free to tweet me, email me or message me and let me know.  I can try and create some more if we get a chance of another interview.
Anyway, without further ado here we go.  Hopefully a nice easy one to start with. 😊

1)      Your track of 2022 so far?

I’d say the Mind Dimension edit has been the biggest for me so far if we are talking my own productions, but my favourite by another artist would have to be UUU by WhomadeWho

2)      I read some time ago you used a commodore amiga 500 as your music production machine. Would you ever see a time to bring one back to life to create a track in the future? (I used to have an amiga and loved it but never used it for music production, just games.)

I did try some years back when I found it in my basement. Sadly, it sounded so terrible, that it made no sense. It was an 8-bit system with 4 channels back then, so it was extremely limited. Also programming in the tracker style Daw, looks more like the matrix code than anything else. Was a lot of fun back then though, and the most fascinating thing is that the limits really made me more creative.

3)      Do you think clubbing is a safe thing to do as a person on their own (no matter who they are)?

I sincerely hope so. I’m still baffled that in 2022 we are even hearing about people getting drugged or harassed at parties. It’s just mind-blowing that we haven’t evolved further.

For me it is essential to create a safe space for all people. I’m always very attentive to what’s happening in the club, and I’ve stopped some situations over the years, where I felt people weren’t behaving accordingly.

This is also the reason why I’ve never played Russia or Saudi. I can bear the thought of someone getting hurt because of sexual orientation or dressing in a certain way because they came to hear me play. Not on my watch.

4)       Have you ever been clubbing by yourself?

Of course, many times. I used to go out alone all the time. The beauty of our scene is that we have friends everywhere. Once you’re in to the same music, meeting likeminded people is so rewarding. I’ve met my best and oldest friends in Clubs.

5)      I believe you are into your Sci-Fi films and if you ever had a chance, what film would you like to re-do the music for and create your own soundtrack to the movie?

Oh man. Most of my favourite sci fi films have amazing soundtracks, that I could never compete with. Actually, there is one film that I’d like to score. The new DUNE film has a terrible soundtrack IMO. I can’t stand it. I’d love to redo that.

6)      Do you see the evolution of Kölsch anytime soon?  As before you produced as; Rune, Rune RK, Ink & Needle?

Is there a “new” music style you want to make, maybe that isn’t the sound of Kölsch?

I can only answer no. I haven’t gotten bored of producing Kolsch records. That’s also why all my other aliases have been retired for 10 years.  It took me while to find the right path for me, but I def feel that I have found it. I guess the beauty of it is also that I don’t feel any limitations for my creativity. I Can pretty much experiment as much as I want.

7)      Is there going to be any new Kölsch merchandise coming? T-Shirts, Trainers, Posters (Artwork releases?)

We are currently working on that. There will be new merch coming.

8) Have you ever thought of doing a Patron site or Twitch Live streams? For fans to follow as your live streams in lock down were hugely successful. Also, if you were, would they maybe more than just DJing but maybe production insights / tutorials? I noticed you did a few teaser Instagram posts of exclusive tracks. (I got this idea for the question as I follow Rex the Dog on Patron and Twitch and it is great to get connected on the platform with Jake.)

I actually never felt there was a need for it. During the pandemic I really enjoyed streaming for free, but then Facebook cracked down on it, and it became super hard to do.
Sounds like something that could be fun though.

9)      Bigger the better or smaller and more hidden, daytime or night-time what is the ultimate event to play at if there is such a thing?

All of it. I really have no preference. In the end its all decided by the audience. I really feed of the energy of the crowds. If there is no vibe, I don’t perform as well. It’s a give and take.

10)      I have yet to track down a video of you on MasterChef Denmark.  Do you know if there is a copy out there that would be great to watch?

I actually have no clue. I never watched it after. It felt so cringe to see myself on tv, that I decided to leave it. Maybe I’ll have to revisit.

11)   5th Studio Album – any teasers? (Names, dates, tracks?)

No names or tracks yet. I will say though, that I found some old recordings my dad had done before his passing in 2003.

He used to write songs and play guitar. I’m considering doing something with that. Not sure how it all would turn out, but I like the idea.

12)   Finally, this is a cheeky question. Is there a chance I could request a Kölsch fan site exclusive demo or track you have created I could share with fans of the site?  The only place you could find and hear it from like a secret fan’s track?

Let me rummage through my folders, and see if something comes up.

“This is super exciting and so as I get some news, I will post ASAP!”

Also I want to double thanks Rune for his time to answer this questions much appreciated!

Finally, a shoutout to Rami Shamseddine who emailed me about tracking down a track from a Kölsch set he visited “Stereo Montreal” which turned out to be “El Sol Saldra Manana” by Bageera..

Here to an amazing summer of good times!

Keep safe and keep raving!
